Steam containing volatilized organic impurities, for example that obtained by the wet-air oxidation of sulphite liquor, is freed from said impurities by passing the steam together with a free-oxygen containing gas into an aqueous solution of an alkaline scrubbing agent at temperatures above 150 DEG C. and below 374 DEG C. and at superatmospheric pressure, whereby a reaction occurs between the scrubbing agent and the organic impurities, and the products of this reaction are oxidized in situ to carbon dioxide and water, with simultaneous regeneration of the alkaline scrubbing agent. The alkaline scrubbing agent may be K2CO3, KOH, Na2CO3, NaOH, Li2CO3 or LiOH. An oxidation catalyst may be employed, e.g. a noble metal, heavy metal or iron group metal or the oxides, phosphates or acetates of such metals, a mixture of silver oxide and manganese dioxide being specifically mentioned. The quantity of free-oxygen containing gas used is preferably such that there is a 5% excess of oxygen over the stoichiometric amount required to oxidize the organic impurities present. Specification 706,686 is referred to.
