PURPOSE:To surely nitride compact consisting essentially of silicon powder to the inside thereof in a short time and to produce a silicon nitride sintered compact excellent in strength. CONSTITUTION:A compact is formed from 82.0-98.4wt.% (expressed in terms of Si3N4) silicon powder, 1.5-10.0wt.% Y2O3 powder, <=5.0wt.% Al2O3 powder and 0.1-3.0wt.% (expressed in terms of element) powder of a metal having valence different from that of Si, 0.3-1.0Angstrom ionic radius and 579-1,450 deg. m.p. as silicide or powder of oxide of the metal. The compact is nitrided by heating in a nitrogen-contg. atmosphere and fired at >=1,900 deg.C. |
