PURPOSE: To obtain a high solid fabric softener comprising a solvent free quaternary ammonium compound by using a fatty acid, an amine and a quaternizing agent, without a side reaction that produces a viscous fatty acid ester having difficulty in handling. CONSTITUTION: This solid material free from solvent and amine salt, including a quaternary ammonium compound and fatty acid is obtained by reacting an amine, preferably methyl amine of dehydrogenated beef tallow and a quaternizing agent, preferably a dialkyl sulfate in a solvent comprising water and an alcohol, heating and mixing in nitrogen gas flow, adding a fatty acid (e.g.; stearic acid), carrying out the reaction free from side reaction which produces a fatty acid ester, removing the water and the alcohol in the form of vapor by sparging a nitrogen gas at 80-100 deg.C and/or in vacuum. This product is used as a fabric softener. |
