PURPOSE:To compensate the noise components mixed with signals after amplification and to maintain the S/N of the output signal by providing an amplifying means consisting of a rare earth doped optical fiber, an optical coupler and a laser diode and providing the output side of this amplifying means with a optical bistable element. CONSTITUTION:This optical amplifier consists of the rare earth doped optical fiber 1, the optical multiplexer 2, the laser diode 3 and the optical bistable element 4. The rare earth doped optical fiber 1 is, for example, an optical fiber constituted by adding a rare earth, such as Er (Erbium) to the fiber. The optical multiplexer 2 is inputted with input light and the laser light for excitation emitted by the laser diode 3 and multiplexes the respective light rays. The optical multiplexer 2 applies the light obtd. by multiplexing to the rare earth doped optical fiber 1. The optical bistable element 4 shapes the waveform of the light signal outputted from the rare earth doped optical fiber 1. The intensity of the light signal the light beams amplified by the amplifying means is made into either of the two stable point by the optical bistable element 4. |
