The facsimile machine has a paper feed roll (5) feeding paper (6) to a second roller (9). Access to the paper is gained by an openable top (1) swivelling about an axis (3). The top has a protruding section (11A) with a hollow diameter at the protruding end. A rod (11) fits into a hole (10) in the chassis. The rod is pushed upwards by a flexible metallic strip (12). The action of the lid closing pushes the paper in place, closing the electrical rod connection (13). If either the lid is not closed, or the paper not present, the electrical circuit remains open, and detection is achieved. ADVANTAGE - Number of components needed to detect end of paper roll, and opening of container for access are reduced.
