PURPOSE:To perform appropriate recovery correspondence and to improve reliability by performing image formation for image information in a predetermined direction when it is impossible to recognize the image direction of the image information. CONSTITUTION:A counter 510 selects a level recognized as white at the picture element of a CCD 250 with a comparator 511 and counts a picture element clock 512. The clock 512 latches a count value every time a picture element signal turns from white to black and the count value is stored in a counter latch 513. Also, the count value is reset with the input of a line synchronous signal 514. The value of the latch 513 is read at the output timing of original rear end signals using the circuit, the count is performed at an original end face and a termination part and the image direction is detected. In this case, when no black picture element is recognized, the output of the latch 513 is not present and a blank sheet of paper is recognized. Also, since the images are formed in the predetermined direction and sent out to an operation unit 204 after completing copying when the image direction can not be recognized, the appropriate recovery correspondence is performed and the reliability can be improved. |
