PURPOSE:To prevent color mixing even if a printing speed is increased and to enable multicolor printing with a small-sized device. CONSTITUTION:At least second and subsequent electrostatic charging stages are executed by electrostatic chargers 5 respectively having control electrodes. The relations among a control potential Vg to be impressed to the control electrodes of the electrostatic chargers 5, a target potential V0 after the electrostatic charge of the non-image parts in the electrostatic charging stages and a DC component Vdc of developing biases in respective developing stages are so set as to satisfy ¦V0¦>¦Vdc¦>=¦Vg¦. As a result, the potential Vi after the reelectrostatic charge of the toner image parts can be increased even if the surface potential Vn of the non-image parts is not excessively increased even if sufficient corona current is passed. Consequently, the potential Vi of the toner image parts after the reelectrostatic charge rises higher than the DC component Vdc of the developing bias potential, and therefore, the intrusion of other toners is prevented.
