Thermal drying of sludges, especially sewage sludge - sludge is atomised by jet of hot gas before being dried by further hot gas stream

A new procedure for drying sludges has the novel feature that the sludge (1) leaving a delivery device (4) is impacted by at least one hot gas jet (10) moving at a higher velocity and in a different direction. The sludge is atomised and is then dried by a further hot gas stream (11). Also claimed is a device for carrying out the procedure, with a gas inlet (13) adjacent to the sludge delivery point and directed at an angle to the direction of sludge flow, and at least one other gas inlet (14) at a distance from the first and directed at an angle to the direction of the first gas inlet. USE/ADVANTAGE - Especially for drying sewage sludge. The energy expenditure and wear associated with mechanical atomisation are avoided, and even difficult materials such as sewage sludge, which tend to produce blockages, are dried in a simple and economical manner.
