The steel mats (1) are transported onto a deposition device (2) which travels in the longitudinal direction of the mat and which deposits mats successively. They are then controllably placed. The deposition device has the same dimensions as those of the mat. The deposition device may be divided, being telescopically or slidingly reattachable. The mats may be clamped to one or both ends of the device which is located downstream of a welding machine or a shear used to cut lattices to length.
