摘要 The method employs an opto-electronic sensor e.g. a vertically directed video-camera (3) above the road (1). A prescribed rectangular volume is identified during an initial set-up and calibration phase (2) during which the scale-factor and objective lens distortion is established. The volume is sub-divided by uniformly spaced vertical reference planes (4) across the direction of vehicle travel and successive 2-dimensional exposures of the vehicles at fixed intervals of time enable speed and separation distances to be evaluated via the reference planes. Measurement accuracy is evaluated and reproduced. USE/ADVANTAGE - Continuous measurement of vehicle speeds and vehicle separation in conditions of high-density, high speed traffic. Further video camera identify vehicles in breach of regulations via registration numbers, when triggered by system.
