The appts. works on the density difference principle and uses a separating fluid with a density between those of the materials to be separated. The appts comprises a centrifuge (10) with an outer drum (20) having a common discharge for floating, less dense material (25) and the fluid and a second discharge point which is intermittently opened to remove heavier material (24) which sinks to the drum (20) wall. In a claimed process the plastic and separating fluid (17) are fed (11) into the rotating centrifuge (10) and builds up behind a dam (19). Heavier plastic (24) sinks to the drum (20) wall and lighter material (25) and fluid flows over the lip (21) of the dam. USE/ADVANTAGE - Separating thermoplastic mixtures, esp. scrap plastic, e.g. electronic, household or automobile scrap, mfd. in e.g. PVC, PE. Shorter separation time and avoids expensive device to prevent fluid turbulence.
