A method and a filter for eliminating noise from a sampled video signal, in which samples from at least one line are conducted into a window and, using the samples of the window, a filtered sample (Yn) is formed to replace the original sample (Xn). First, the difference between an original sample (Xn) to be analysed and the original adjacent samples thereof are calculated. The differences are compared with a given threshold value (Kthresh.). An average of the sample being analysed and the adjacent samples is calculated, the difference thereof from the sample being analysed is smaller than said threshold value, If at least one difference is smaller than the threshold value, the average is set to become the filtered sample (Yn), but otherwise the filtered sample is the same as the original sample being analysed. The calculation of the average used in the method may also be accomplished recursively. <IMAGE>
