<p>The abseil (rope) brake (10) includes a first flange (14) for supporting a pulley (16) and a runner (26), and an additional braking lever (34) mounted with limited pivoting in the vicinity of the pulley (16) between an inactive unlocking position for a first direction of winding of the rope (12) into the passage space (20), and an active blocking position, in which a wedging (camming) surface (38) of the lever (34) presses the rope (12) against the pulley (16). The lever (34) is pivoted into its active position automatically in the event of incorrect winding of the rope in a second direction which is opposite to the first direction, and in the presence of tension in the rope when the abseil brake (10) is under load.
