<p>The invention relates to a method of grinding the butt-welding junction of two elements, such as rails. According to this method, a reference point (P1, P2) is established on either side of the junction region by setting reference establishment members in contact with the rail (6), and the elements are ground in the junction region in at least one pass defined by the reference points thus established, contact of the grinder and the rail being indicated by an audible sensor. The method is characterised in that the grinder (1) itself is used as the reference establishment member and it is placed in contact first with the rail on one side of the junction then on the other and the data defining these contact points are stored in memory as the reference values.
