The corrosion of metal surfaces is reduced or inhibited by treating the surfaces with a mixture of an aldehyde and an antimony or bismuth compound. The aldehyde has the formula R1C(R2)=C(R3)-CHO where R1 is an aliphatic C3 to C12 group or an aryl group; R2 is H, an aliphatic C3 to C12 group, or an aryl group; and R3 is H, an aliphatic C1 to C5 group, or an aryl group; or any of R1, R2 and R3 is another atom or group which does not adversely affect the corrosion inhibition properties of the aldehyde. Preferred aldehydes are cinnamaldehyde and its derivatives.
|
