TREATMENT OF VOLATILE ORGANOHALOGEN COMPOUND

PURPOSE:To obtain an extremely safe treatment method not bringing about environmental pollution by bringing a volatile organohalogen compd. into contact with a reducing agent in the presence of a metalsupported catalyst and subsequently supplying the same to an adsorbent packed tower. CONSTITUTION:The water containing a volatile organohalogen compd. in a raw water tank 1 is supplied to the upper part of a diffusion tower 3 and air or nitrogen gas is blown in the lower part of the tower 3 to be countercurrently brought into contact with said water and the volatile organohalogen compd. is transferred to air or nitrogen gas according to a Henry's law while the treated water is discharged from the bottom part of the tower. The diffused gas containing the volatile organohalogen compd. is guided to a metal supported catalyst packed tower 5 along with hydrogen gas being a reducing agent and the volatile organohalogen compd. is subjected to reductive decomposition treatment. The gas containing the undecomposed substance or a reaction intermediate is supplied to an adsorbent packed tower 6A and the undecomposed substance or the reaction intermediate is adsorbed and removed and the treated gas is discharged to the atmosphere.
