PURPOSE:To provide a method for producing methacrylic acid in high selectivity and in a high yield by catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation reaction of isobutyric acid. CONSTITUTION:The method for producing methacrylic acid by subjecting isobutyric acid to a catalytic oxidative dehydrogenation reaction using molecular oxygen in the presence of a catalyst at a high temperature in a gas phase comprises employing, as a catalyst, a composition of formula: FeaPbCocPBdOe wherein Fe is iron; P is phosphorus; Co is cobalt; Pb is lead; and O is oxygen; the subscripts: a, b, c, d and e exhibit the number of the atoms; when a is fixed to 1, b is 0.7-5, c is 0.01-2, d is 0.01-3, and e is a value naturally determined by the atomic valency of the element except oxygen, usually 4-20. |
