The sandwich structure is formed by a series of hollow truncated pyramids arranged so that their lateral faces transmit loading forces. The array of pyramids is located between a pair of skin layers (34,36), with the truncated surfaces adjacent to the inner surfaces of the skins. At least one of the skin layers is itself formed by a similar structure of truncated pyramids (37,42) enclosed between a pair of cladding layers (38,40).
