The water flows through a vessel (1) with a component forming two displaced electrodes in the voltage series. To control the water hardness, the conductive link between the electrodes is broken by a switch when the voltage between the electrodes drops below a set nominal value on a change of the water conductivity. Also claimed is a vessel (1) with the electrode system, and a switch mechanism to break the voltage link between the electrodes. The switch mechanism has a transistor (15) in the current circuit to the electrode unit. The vessel (1) acts as the cathode, and at least one anode (1) is fitted in the vessel (1). The vessel (1) is of fine steel, and the anode is a replaceable sacrificed magnesium anode. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for recirculating hot and cold water such as in boilers etc., to prevent limestone build-up. The electrolytic degassing and treatment of the water uses no injected voltage while the pH value is maintained.
