The converter takes an infra-red image and produces a visible image on an optical display. The infra-red is detected with a pyro-electric material associated with an opto-electronic display using liquid crystals to modulate visible light. The electrical modification of the liquid crystal to generate the display is achieved by the distribution of surface charges on the pyro-electric material. Polarised light is used to illuminate the liquid crystal display.
