PURPOSE: To provide a reflection type optical multiplexer/demultiplexer composed of the small integrated structure of high efficiency not generating the large amount of crosstalk even when many channels are handled. CONSTITUTION: An integrated optical multiplexer/demultiplexer is composed of plural waveguides 101- N for transmitting multiplexed optical signals and interleaved plural waveguides 121- N for transmitting non-multiplexed optical signals. The two sets of the plural waveguides are connected to the boundary 11 of a free space area 14. The plural waveguides perform communication with an optical diffraction grating composed of the plural waveguides 161- M respectively terminated at reflection elements 181- N with each other through the tree space area. The length of the respective waveguides in the diffraction grating is different from the length of the adjacent waveguide in the diffraction grating by a predetermined amount and as a result, a predetermined path length difference is derived for the optical signals advancing in the diffraction grating waveguides. |
