A domestic lighting circuit (4), eg, for a staircase, is connected to a timer (1). The timer is activated by control lead (2) via switches (3). After a certain time period (T1) without activity from any switches, the light output is reduced to a lower constant level for a further time period (T2), and then the lights are automatically cut out. Alternatively, during the second time period, the light may vary periodically. The lengths of the two time periods are adjustable. ADVANTAGE - Gives visible warning that light is shortly to go out.
