The invention provides a wear resistant carbon alloy surface comprising a carbon alloy irradiated by ions. Suitable carbon alloys are carbon/silicon and carbon/silicon/oxygen alloys or other alloys chosen for a complementary technological feature of the alloying component. The invention also describes a process for providing a wear resistant surface comprising irradiating a carbon alloy surface with ions. Where a substrate is unsuitable for ion irradiation a process is provided coating the substrate with carbon or carbon alloy and irradiating the coating. A surface of the substrate (10) is filled with a filler (20) where required. A coating (30) of carbon or carbon alloy is deposited on the filled surface, preferably by chemical vapour deposition. The coating is polished and irradiated with ions to give a wear resistant surface (50). |
