A water borne vessel (10) is supported by a pair of laterally extendible pontoons (14, 16) which pontoons are extended as a function of both speed and water conditions. A combination of extensible hydraulic cylinder units (66, 68) and threaded shafts (110, 116) selectively provide control of the degree of extension or retraction of the pontoons (14, 16) and maintenance of the pontoons at the selected position of the pontoons and a synchronizing device (360, 362, 364, 366, 370, 372, 374, 376, 378) maintains movement of the pontoons in concert. The configuration of the asymmetric pontoons (14, 16) provides different width immersed surfaces and different wetted areas as a function of the degree of extension to accommodate speed, water conditions, wind and draft for optimum travel. |
