A joint for connecting a first drive shaft (16) to a second drive shaft (18) includes a ball and socket arrangement (14) connecting the two shafts(16,18)and a spring (12) attached at one end to one shaft (16)and at the other end to the other shaft(18). The spring (12) is made of a polymer matrix containing fibers (102) made from poly(p-phenylenete terephthalamide) resin. The fibers(102)extend through the polymer matrix along the helical axis of the spring (12). The spring (12)is disposed about the ball and socket arrangement (14) so that shock loads are absorbed by the spring (12).
