A low profile antenna system for a communication receiver (700) comprises a frame (102) having front (108, 110) and side (106) surfaces for enclosing a printed circuit board (202) supporting a receiver (708), the front (108, 110) surface of the frame (102) including a first conductive plate (108), an isolated portion (110) thereof, which couples to the printed circuit board (202) and forms a first portion of a loop antenna (702). A conductor (208) is coupled to the printed circuit board (202) and forms a second portion of the loop antenna (702). A second conductive plate (210) is coupled to the frame (102) and forms a rear surface of the frame (102) to completely enclose the printed circuit board (202). The second conductive plate (210) is electrically coupled to the conductor (208) thereby enhancing the sensitivity of the loop antenna (702).
