Device for coding still images comprising means (10) for segmenting the said images into homogeneous regions to which a specific label is attached and means (20, 30) for coding the content and the contours of the said regions, and wherein the contour-coding means comprise a sub-unit (30) for coding contour information and itself comprising (a) means (31, 32, 33, 34, 35) for detecting contours in the image to be coded, (b) means (41, 42) for detecting, around the contour of each region, the actual direction of traversal in regard to the type of contour edge adopted for transmission, and for testing by comparison, for each pair of successive image points of each stretch of this contour, between the actual direction of traversal thus detected and the instantaneous direction of traversal between these two points, (c) a stage (43) for coding the stretches which are traversed in the said detected actual direction of traversal, and (d) means (60, 51) for reinitialising the whole procedure for each of the regions. <IMAGE> |
