[Also in Divisions E2 and H2] A shaft 34 driven by a reversible electric motor is coupled to a perpendicular output shaft 38 by a crank and connecting link assembly 35 which imparts a variable speed to the output shaft when the shaft 34 is driven at a constant speed, the energization and direction of the motor being controlled by a relay circuit (see Division H2) to oscillate the shaft 34 cyclically at a constant speed between first and second positions whereby the speed of the output shaft between said positions is gradually increased from zero to a maximum and then gradually decreased to zero. A crank 36 secured to the shaft 34 is pivotally connected to one end of a link 37 the other end of which is pivoted to the output shaft 38, and the construction is such that oscillation of the shaft 34 through 180 degrees turns the shaft 38 through 110 degrees. The shaft 34 may also be rotated manually by means of a crank handle 67 on a shaft 66 carrying a bevel gear 68 in mesh with a bevel gear 69 freely rotatable on the shaft 34. An arcuate abutment 70 on the gear 69 is adapted to engage a radial pin 71 extending from the shaft 34. When the shaft 34 is driven by the electric motor it rotates through only 180 degrees so that the pin remains clear of the abutment. |
