A method and apparatus for conveying a printing mechanism over a surface of a substrate as the printing means (14), creates indicia on the surface of the substrate, and for conveying an optical sensor (12) over the surface of the substrate so as to optically scan an image of indicia. The printer comprises a shuttle assembly (1) including a housing (2) that accommodates a mobility subsystem (5,6), a sensor subsystem (12), a printer subsystem (14) and a communications subsystem, each in cooperative communication with a control processor subsystem (21). The mobility subsystem includes an electric motor (5) rotationally coupled to a rolling member (6).
