A process for obtaining palladium from aqueous lye, occurring during the production of the semi-synthetic antibiotic sulbactame of formula I from the dehalogenisation of a derivative of penicillanic acid of general formula II, hydrogenolysis by hydrogen in an aqueous or aqueous organic environment, using palladium on carbon as a catalyst. The initial waste lye, with dry content around 30 % by weight, with a pH of 8 to 13, at 60 to 120 degrees C, is processed with sodium dithionite, then, after cooling the displaced palladium is separated off. The processing can be supplemented by extraction of bromine or bromides.<IMAGE>
