[Also in Division F2] A self-closing spray valve for aerosol containers, comprises a valve stem 9 axially movable in a valve housing 1 in the opening sense against a spring 4, there being formed in the stem an axial outlet duct 8 communicating with the container by way of a radial duct 7 which opens into an annular groove 5 in the stem, the radial duct being normally closed by a resilient sealing washer 3 of constant internal diameter in its unstressed state, the inner periphery of which is engaged, under radial compression, in the annular groove and the outer periphery of which is held by the housing, wherein the diameter of that annular portion of the valve stem which lies between the radial duct and the lower edge 5c of the annular groove increases from the radial duct toward the lower edge of the annular groove. As shownthe washer is normally urged against an over, turned flange of the dispenser cover 15. That portion 3a of the groove which increases from the duct 7 toward the lower edge of the groove, is formed as a radius. In a modification, the groove 5 is of circular arcuate cross section, whereby both the peripheral edges of the sealing washer are deformed against the stem, so, however, as to leave a small annular space between the washer and the base of the groove in a region between the deformed edges of the hole in the washer. In another modification, the valve stem has a shoulder locating on a joggled portion of the container cover 15 so that it is positively located in the closed position and the washer assumes a planar position. The stem has an extension 22 working in guides 23 in the housing 1. An enlarged portion 25 of the stem may have radial projections 18 which bear against the sealing washer. |
