This invention is directed to compositions and methods for inhibiting hepatocyte invasion by malarial sporozoites. More specifically, the invention is directed (a) to ligands for the hepatocyte plasma membrane receptor for the circumsporozoite protein and peptides based on a portion of the circumsporozoite protein that constitutes an essential part of the specific ligand for this receptor; and (b) to methods using such peptides to inhibit circumsporozoite invasion of liver cells. |
