PURPOSE:To stably produce a water absorbing material having high water absorbability even in an ionic aqueous solution without generating degradation and color change, by irradiating and crosslinking a polyalkylene oxide in the absence of oxygen. CONSTITUTION:A polyalkylene oxide composed mainly of an ethylene oxide component is irradiated with an ionizing radiation (electron beam, gamma rays, X rays, etc.) or ultraviolet rays in an oxygen free condition (vacuum or filled with an inert gas) and crosslinked to produce a water absorbing material. Preferably the polyalkylene oxide is formed in a long film and rolled up in a rolled state and the rolled film is irradiated and crosslinked at once with gamma rays in the absence of oxygen. By irradiating and crosslinking in the oxygen free condition, degradation and color change caused by scission of molecular chains are prevented. Hence, the water absorbing material having high water absorbability for both ion exchange and ionic aqueous solution can be produced stably and reproducibly. |
