PURPOSE:To house surplus lengths with high protective strength in the joint box of an optical submarine cable, etc., without superposing these surplus lengths on each other. CONSTITUTION:The surface of the surplus length winding cylinder 1 of the joint box of the optical submarine cable for winding the connecting surplus lengths Gb) of optical fibers and housing the junctures (c) thereof into the surplus length winding cylinder within a pressure resistant cylinder 2 is provided with many guide pins 3. The surplus lengths are housed in the cylinder while the entanglement thereof with each other is prevented by these guide pins 3. The guide pins 3 assure the spacing between the pressure resistant cylinder 2 and the surplus length winding cylinder 1 and, therefore, high mechanical protective strength is obtd.
