PURPOSE:To provide a small-sized stable ultraviolet laser of high efficiency, by using a diamond crystal as the medium of laser oscillation. CONSTITUTION:A diamond crystal of high crystallinity wherein impurity contents are suitably controlled emits light whose wavelength is in the range of 225-300nm by the pumping of application of an electron beam or carrier injection. Ib type diamond single crystal is worked into a rectangular parallelopiped of 7X3X1mm<3> and polished. Gold is evaporated on the single surface of 3X1mm<2> of the rectangular parallelopiped, thereby obtaining a total reflection mirror. This diamond 1 is mounted on a cooling base 2, and the periphery is vacuumized. The surface of 7X3mm<2> of the diamond is irradiated with an electron beam from an electron gun 5 arranged above the diamond 1. While the electron beam irradiation is repeated, the angle of a half mirror 4 arranged on the opposite side of the total reflection mirror 3 is finely adjusted. Thereby desired laser light is oscillated. |
