The spring system is switchable between two stiffness states, hard and soft, and/or has variable damping. A medium displacement device can adopt different displacement states so that a working chamber (8) filled with a compressible medium undergoes a vol. change of at least 1:10 to produce different stiffness values and hence natural frequencies of the spring system. Two working chambers filled with a compressible medium can be used. These can be combined and separated to form a large vol. and a small vol. working chamber. The chambers communicate via electromagnetically operated valves. USE/ADVANTAGE - E.g. for use in machine tools. Enables spring-mounted moving wts. to be brought to rest relatively quickly when moved to new position.
