The position measuring arrangement has a periodically magnetised scale and a magnetoresistive sensor movable wrt. the scale. The sensor has magnetoresistive film strips (11-14,21-24) transverse to the scale direction and connected as a Wheatstone bridge. Four magnetoresistive film strips (11-14) of a first bridge each have a distance of half the periodic length (6) of the scale. Four strips (21-24) of a second bridge are displaced wrt. the first four by a quarter periodic length. All the strips have a number of high conductivity thin film strips (7) at regular intervals, whose longitudinal directions form the same angle with that of the magnetoresistive strips. USE/ADVANTAGE - For measuring linear or rotational positions, e.g. for process control. High resolution.
