Surgical implant with metal core and ceramic coating - in two layers, the inner highly vitrified to improve adhesion and reduce leaching of metal ions

Surgical implant comprises a metallic base with a bioactive ceramic coating comprises (1) an inner layer which has been vitrified to an extent of at least 50 vol.% and (2) a porous outer layer which largely (esp. practically entirely) covers the inner layer. Pref. one of these layers (esp. the outer) is of hydroxyapatite (MA); the other can be Ma; Ca phosphate; a glass of the Al2O3, CaO, TiO2; CaO-Al2O3; Al2O3-SiO2 types, or a bioglass of the SiO2-Na2O-CaO-P2O5 type, or a mixt. of any of these. Best both layers are of HA. USE/ADVANTAGE - The implants are useful in bone and dental prosthesis. The use of a 2-component coating significantly improves adhesion to the metal base and inhibits leaching of metal ions from the base. The outer, porous layer retains high affinity for bone.
