In appts. which applies heat treatment to bulk solids such as earth and sand, the novelty is that the substance under treatment is introduced through a shaft (16) onto an inclined plane, on which it is directly heated by a burner unit (26,28); further that the hot air generated by the burner (26,28) rises meandering through the shaft (16) to pre-heat the descending bulk solids as this drops through one or more horizontal sieves (36). Pref. the shaft (16) is arranged roughly vertically. ADVANTAGE - The appts. reduces the amount of energy which is required to achieve the required heat treatment.
