The waste water pipe has a measurement section whose throughput is measured with pref. a magnetic-inductive flow meter (MID). A motorised choke (9) downstream of the flow meter can be varied and closed off. The water level is sensed in a chamber or channel upstream of the waste water pipe and the choke is controlled during a first operating mode so that a characteristic flow rate is not exceeded. During a second operating mode, the choke is controlled so that it is closed when the water level and/or the flow rate reaches a lower limit. Measurements are then restarted after the water level reaches a second level and/or after expiry of a time delay. USE/ADVANTAGE - For use in waste water systems. Accurate measurement over entire flow rate range.
