The adhesive consists of: (a) a component 'A' comprising an aq. alkali metal silicate soln. (water glass) and compatible mineral fillers which, when in dispersed form, can thicken liqs. to a soft paste, e.g. kaolin, talc, mica powder, attapulgite, Neuburger siliceous chalk, 'sillitin' and crystalline grain fractions such as quartz sand of size 0.01-3 mm and (b) a component 'B' comprising an aq. suspension of finely divided amorphous silicates of max. 2 (pref. max. 1) microns size and of at least 15 sq.m/g specific surface, a hardener for the silicate and opt. additional conventional finely divided mineral fillers and sand fractions, e.g. quartz sand of size 0.01-3 mm. The water glass is pref. selected from Na, K and Li water glasses and has a SiO2:Me2O wt. ratio of 1.5-4:1. The hardener is aluminium phosphate or zinc phosphate. The finely divided amorphous silicates may be ferrosilicon mfg. dust, commercial finely ground pptd. silica or commercially prepd. natural silicates such as diatomaceous earth and kieselguhr. The mixing ratio of components 'A' and 'B' is 100:10-100. ADVANTAGE - The cpd. consists of purely inorganic components, can be prepd. as a liq. or pasty system and, after mixing with the hardener, hardens rapidly.
