A coagulant for paint and/or wax in wet separators is claimed (I), contg. an aq. soln. or suspension of shellac, balsamic resin or other fresh natural resins in the form of soluble salts with amines, alkanolamines or alkali hydroxides; the soln. has pH 6-9. Pref. (I) can also contain foam suppressants, biocidal agents and surfactants, and also organic or inorganic flocculation aids, pref. organic polyelectrolytes or layer silicates and/or silica. USE/ADVANTAGE - Used for coagulating coating materials such as paints and/or waxes in the circulating water and/or coagulation pond on a painting line, using a concn. of 0.01-5 (pref. 0.1-0.5) wt.% (I) w.r.t. total amt. of circulating water, in amts. of 1-100 (pref. 2-10) wt.% w.r.t. paint overspray (claimed). The invention provides a coagulating agent for solvent-based or water-based paint etc., which ensures permanent removal and agglomeration of overspray in paint booths, without affecting the possible recovery and recycling of useful materials from the coagulate. The coagulant is in the form of a mobile liq. which is easily metered and rapidly dispersed in the circulating water, and the density of the coagulant material can be modified by special additives, for sedimentation or flotation as required.
