With at least a substantially catalytic ineffective operating temp, during idling or part-load operation of the IC engine (1), one group (2) of cylinders is supplied with a specified lean fuel mixture and the other group (3) of cylinders with a specified rich fuel mixture, such that the cylinder groups with different air fuel ratios, produce in average at least approximately, stoichiometric air-fuel ratios.
