A burner for heating an exhaust gas stream includes a combustor head (38) with a fuel/air charge preparator (52) comprising a fuel nozzle (60) and dual vortex atomiser (56). The charge preparator is mounted on one side of a partition (46) including an outlet (48) through which the atomised fuel and air pass to a combustion chamber (34) formed by a combustor tube (36) fixed to the partition (46). The combustor tube (36) has igniting means (42) and outlets (44) for the burning fuel/air mixture. The outlets (44) have flow directing louvres (110) directing the combusted mixture in a predetermined direction to optimise mixing of the combusted mixture with the exhaust gas stream.
