Various methods for reducing redundancy and irrelevance are known for the transmission of picture information via a channel having a limited data capacity. Thus, movement vectors are determined and coded for part-picture areas. The part-picture areas themselves are also subjected to a coding, for example a discrete cosine transformation DCT. A method is specified which provides a possibility of reliable picture reconstruction. In the method according to the invention, displacement vectors (D) are determined part-picture-area by part-picture-area for a movement-compensated estimated picture (K + 3<*>) and transmitted. Using the picture-element-to-picture-element differences (DFD) between estimated picture (K + 3<*>) and the new picture (K + 3) corresponding to the estimated picture, part-picture areas having a high content of movement are DCT-transformed and transmitted. Only every third picture is transmitted. Intermediate pictures are extrapolated with movement compensation.
