In a knotter for forming a fisherman's knot and comprising a pair of knotting bills, the latter are opened to release the thread ends before the component knots are drawn together. A hollow shaft 21, journalled in a casing 1, carries at one end a cup-shaped member 2, and is rotated via gears 22, 23 and a follower arm 25 from a cam 24 on a rotary spindle 29. The rim of cup 2 is formed with teeth 4 which mesh with teeth 5 associated with conventional knotting bills 26, 27. The rim of cup 2 is also formed with two pairs of diametrically-opposed, axially-spaced thread-receiving notches 6, 7. Fixed plates 8 are formed with notches 9 and 10, axially aligned with notches 7 and 6 respectively. In the initial position of the parts, notches 6 are radially aligned with notches 10 and receive the opposed thread ends c and d, while notches 9 are radially displaced from notches 7 and receive the main bodies a and b on the threads. A spindle 31, slidable in shaft 21, carries at one end a tensioning member 17 disposed within cup 2, and is connected at the other end to one arm of a lever 28 the other arm of which carries a follower pin 41 which cooperates with a cam 30 on spindle 29 for shifting tensioner 17 outwardly against spring bias. Arms 12, pivoted at 13, co-operate with fixed stops 11 to clamp the threads a, b when arms 14 associated therewith are released from recesses 15 in cup 2. During the initial movement of cup 2, the bills operate to tie the respective knots loosely. Member 17 then moves slightly forward to strip the knots from the bills. Member 17 then retracts, and the bills move in the reverse direction and open to release the thread ends c, d. Member 17 finally moves forward to engage the thread between the knots for drawing these tightly together, and arms 12 move away from stops 11 to release the threads a, b. |
