Butadiene is polymerized in an inert medium in the presence of a catalyst obtained by reacting (1) TiCl4, with (2) a lithium-aluminium tetraalkyl and/or a lithium-aluminium alkyl hydride, and with (3) I2 and/or compounds of iodine with other halogens and/or mixtures of iodine with other halogens. The lithium-aluminium compounds may be LiAl(C4H9)4, LiA1(n-C4H9) (iso-C4H9)3, LiAl(n-C8H17)(C2H5)3, LiAl (CH2-CH2-cyclohexyl)4 or LiAlH2 (vinylcyclohexenyl)2. Component (3) of the catalyst may be iodine monochloride, iodine monobromide, or a mixture of iodine and bromine. The inert medium may be butane, hexane, octane, cyclohexane, methyl cyclohexane, petroleum ether, hydrogenated Diesel oil, benzene, toluene, xylene, isopropyl benzene, or methyl naphthalene. The butadiene may be purified. The polymerizates may be purified by conventional techniques, and subsequently admixed with stabilizers and antioxidants. The butadiene has a predominantly 1, 4-cis-structure. Specification 776,326 is referred to. |
