Compounds having excellent UV-A absorptivity and a non-polar oil compatibility, and which can be used topically for treating the skin, are of the formula (R)nPh-CH=CH-CO-CH2-CO-C(CH3)3 wherein (R)nPh represents phenyl optionally substituted by up to 3 groups R independently selected from C1-8 alkyl and C1-18 alkoxy.
