Use of vanillin and its derivates in plastic materials to produce a barrier effect to ultraviolet radiation.

Use, in a plastic, of vanillin or of one of its derivatives, preferably ortho-vanillin or syringaldehyde to impart an ultraviolet radiation barrier effect to the said plastic, optionally in combination with an additive, for example a dye or an inorganic additive capable of modifying the UV spectrum of vanillin or of its derivative by shifting the absorption break region into the visible. Where a plastic film for packaging foodstuff products is involved, the additive is preferably an alimentary-grade dye, for example an E 110 or E 102 or E 104 yellow in a proportion of 0.01 to 0.1 % by weight. It may also involve a colloidal silica whose elementary particles can cluster in the said plastic film into agglomerates less than one micrometre in size.
