摘要 PURPOSE:To have a clutch of high performance built in a differential without almost enlarging its external size, by installing the clutch for reducing the extent of back-drive out of the idler wheel side at the time of two-wheel drive, in a reduction gear mechanism inside the differential. CONSTITUTION:A spline wheel 30a is installed on an outer circumference of a differential case 30 in a housing 24 and another spline wheel 32a of the same type in a part of a ring gear 32 as one body, respectively. And, a spline sleeve 38 is engaged with these wheels free of slide motion in directions of arrows (a) and (b), constituting a clutch. And, at the time of four-wheel drive, the clutch is engaged, transmitting engine's rotational power out of an input shaft 26 to the differential case 30 via a reduction gear mechanism, and an axle shaft 20 is rotated. On the other hand, at the time of two-wheel drive, the clutch is disengaged, and rotation of front wheels as idler wheels is made so as not to be transmitted to the ring gear 32 of the reduction gear mechanism and the input shaft 26. With this constitution, there is unnecessary to make outside dimensions of a differential so much larger.
